There are two primary categories under which an individual may petition for dual citizenship in Sri Lanka under the country's citizenship statute (sections 19, 20, or 21 of the Citizenship statute, No. 18 of 1948).
- Resumption: Section 19(2) of the aforementioned Act has provisions for individuals whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased as a result of obtaining citizenship in another nation and who subsequently wish to regain their Sri Lankan citizenship.
- Retention: Section 19(3) of the aforementioned Act provides guidelines for individuals who wish to become citizens of another nation but still plan to keep their Sri Lankan citizenship.
If you meet one of the following criteria, you are eligible for dual citizenship in Sri Lanka:
- You were born in Sri Lanka and are over 55
- You were born in Sri Lanka and have professional or academic qualifications (such as a minimum one-year diploma or higher, or any other professional qualification).

Sri Lanka is where you were born, and
* Possess property valued at at least Rs. 2.5 million and have a certified copy of the deed
* A fixed deposit of at least USD 25,000 or Rs. 2.5 million, with a minimum 3-year duration
* A USD 25,000 Treasury Bond (TB) or Security Investment Account (SIA) (for a minimum of three years)
